BLUFORD — Following a week of games where he had scored 42, 31 and 49 points, Webber junior Nathaniel Marlow “only” needed 23 points against Zeigler-Royalton to reach 2000 for his career.
The Tornadoes spent much of the night doubleteaming Marlow, whether he had the ball or not, but it did not phase him as he reached the milestone number before halftime.
Sitting on 21 points (1998) with a little more than 3:00 remaining in the second quarter, Marlow was fouled shooting a three-pointer. He hit the first two free throws to reach 2000, setting off quite a celebration on the Trojans’ side of the gym. Play was briefly stopped, while school officials presented Marlow with a commemorative ball marking the milestone.
Marlow then went back and made the third free throw and added a three-pointer late in the half. He had 27 points at the half and finished with a game high 32. The Trojans finished with a 76-41 win to improve to 21-5 on the season.
Marlow currently has 2009 career points. His cousin Jared Payne owns the school scoring record with 2088. The Trojans have at least five games left this season, and likely more. Webber will visit Cisne Wednesday night.
Lucas Rogers led the Tornadoes with 23. Z-R falls to 7-19 on the season.
