HERRIN — Harrisburg junior Caleb Gore said he did not have high expectations for himself heading into the Herrin Boys Bowling Regional. Rolling a 289 in his opening game changed his point of view.
Gore followed that 289 with a 278 in game two, and big day was on. He finished the 6-game tournament with 1467 pins to take home individual medalist honors by 90 pins. Gore had plenty of company from his teammates in the top 10.
The Bulldogs put three bowlers in the top five and four in the top eight to cruise to the team title as well, finishing with 6447 pins. Carterville was second 192 pins back. Herrin and Massac County also earned spots in Saturday’s Collinsville Sectional.
Joining Gore as individual medalists were Carterville’s Evan Flath who was second with 1377 pins, Harrisburg’s Dalton Wheeler was third with 1346 pins, and Carterville’s David Lutchka was fourth with 1313 pins.
In addition to the four teams, 10 individuals not on those four teams also will advance to the sectional. Four Marion Wildcats advanced–Chandler Buckingham, Ethan Zirkelbach, Garret Murphy, and Shawn Phillips. Carbondale will be sending three to the sectional–Michael Wepseic, Logan Wright, and Colton McKee. Anna-Jonesboro’s Klayton Taylor along with Eldorado teammates Jonathan Williams and Evan Butler also qualified.
