SESSER – The Johnston City Indians rattled off 42 unanswered points on the way to an impressive 50-30 win at previously unbeaten Sesser-Valier/Waltonville, clinching at least a share of the Black Diamond Conference title.

The Red Devils had given up only 32 points in the first seven games of the season.

SVW got off to a quick start, scoring on their first two possessions. After the Indians tied the game at 14-14, they got a defensive stop and then a blocked punt from Evan Sanders to set up their third TD of the opening half to take a 22-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Johnston City then delivered the knockout punch early in the third. After Marcus Leitzen bolted 37 yards for a touchdown, Juan Salazar picked off Trace Payne’s pass to set up another score, and in the blink of an eye, JC had a 38-14 lead.

The Indians added two more touchdowns before the Red Devils picked up a couple of cosmetic scores late.

Both teams are now 7-1. Johnston City will win the conference outright with a win at home over Carmi-White County in next week’s regular season finale. Should the Bulldogs win, it would be a three-way tie with CWC, Johnston City, and SVW sharing the title.
