CARTERVILLE — The Carterville Lions never trailed on the way to winning their first SIRR Ohio championship, beating Murphysboro 28-25.

That doesn’t mean it was easy.

Carterville led 7-0 after one quarter, then after the teams traded touchdowns, the Lions took a 21-14 lead into halftime.

That lead grew to 28-17 after three and stayed that way until Gibson Fager and Tyjaire Kellum connected for a 78-yard touchdown pass with 1:49 left. The two-point conversion pulled the Red Devils within three, but the Lions were able to run out the clock to secure the win.

Both teams are 6-2 on the season. Carterville will close the regular season at home against Anna-Jonesboro. Murphysboro will host Du Quoin next week.
