BENTON — Senior quarterback Gibson Fager threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns in the rain to lead Murphysboro to a 28-20 non-conference road win at Benton.
After the Rangers jumped out to a 6-0 lead, the Red Devils rattled off 21 straight points in the first quarter, capped by Brady LeGrand’s punt block and recovery for a touchdown.
Following a lengthy delay and halftime, Benton pulled within 21-13 after three quarters, but early in the fourth, Fager found Cade Brooks for a 75-yard touchdown. The Rangers scored late but could not get the ball back to try the game.
Both teams are now 2-1 heading into the start of conference play next week. Benton will open SIRR Mississippi play at Benton, while Murphysboro will open SIRR Ohio play at Massac County.
