Fourth quarter explosion boosts Marion past Herrin

MARION — It was a roller coaster season opener for the Marion Wildcats and Herrin Tigers, who were making their debut under new head coach Hunter Shockley.

The Wildcats jumped out to leads of 14-0 and 20-7 at the half, only to watch the Tigers dominate the third quarter and eventually take a 21-20 lead early in the fourth.

Marion then answered with 22 unanswered points over a span of 5:03 in the fourth quarter to take the season opener 42-21.

Callahan Roper completed 12 of 17 for 139 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats, both to Max Wade. Senior running back Ryian Calonne added a pair of rushing touchdowns as well for Marion.

Chris Nelson led the Tigers with 84 yards rushing and 57 yards receiving. Kyrese Lukens rushed for 66 yards and two TDs and complete 2-4 for 57 yards passing in the first half.

Marion (1-0) will travel to Granite City Friday night, while Herrin (0-1) will visit West Frankfort.
