CARBONDALE — After wrapping up at least a share of their ninth straight South Seven softball championship the day before with a win over Carbondale, the Marion Lady Wildcats made it an outright championship, completing a sweep of the Terriers with 6-3 win.
Marion led 6-1 after six innings, but Carbondale did not go quietly, chasing Lady Wildcats’ starter Kaitlyn Reuss closing within 6-3 and bringing the tying run to the plate on Taniyah Truitt’s RBI double.
Alana Bryant came on in relief and struck out two batters to earn the save.
Paislee Freebourn homered and made several sparkling plays at shortstop for the Lady Wildcats, who improve to 23-4, 7-0 in the conference.
Marion, ranked seventh in the latest ICA 3A Poll, will host number one Chatham Glenwood Friday.
The Terriers fall to 9-13-1, 4-3 in the conference. Carbondale will host Anna-Jonesboro Friday and Cobden Saturday.
