Herrin makes it back to back regional titles

CARTERVILLE — The Herrin Tigers made it back to back boys bowling regional titles capturing the Carbondale Regional by 96 pins over Carterville at SI Bowl Saturday.

The Tigers trailed the Lions by two pins through four games but took a 30-pin lead after the fifth game and pulled away in the final game. Herrin’s five bowlers racked up 11 strikes and two spares in the 10th and final frame of the final game to close out the victory in style.

Waterloo and Marion will join Herrin and Carterville in next week’s Carterville Sectional which will also be hosted by SI Bowl.

Carterville’s David Lutchka captured the individual title, averaging 239 for the day to finish with 1438 pins. Lutchka finished 79 pins in front of Marion’s Chandler Buckingham and 80 in front of Herrin’s Chase Lannom. Waterloo’s Lucas Krebel was fourth with Lutchka’s Carterville teammate Evan Flath rounding out the top five.

Ten individuals not on the four qualifying teams also earned a trip to the sectional. Massac County who was fifth as a team will send four individuals to the sectional: Brayden Jennings, Cal Ginger, Gabe Rottman, and Carter Quint. Anna-Jonesboro finished seventh as a team, but three Wildcats did advance: Klayton Taylor, Stuart Busby, and Gavin Moore. Columbia’s Matthew Maue and Dylan Robinson along with Freeburg’s Max Biehl also advanced.

At the Salem Regional, Harrisburg won the title, edging the defending state champion host Wildcats by 33 pins. Mt. Vernon and Centralia also advanced. Salem’s Silas Moats was the individual winner with 1421 pins.

Jerseyville, Alton, Civic Memorial and Highland all advanced from the Alton Regional. O’Fallon, Mascoutah, Breese Central, and Belleville West all advanced from the Belleville East Regional.
