Johnston City moves quickly to fill coaching vacancies

JOHNSTON CITY — Johnston City has wasted no time filling its vacant head coaching positions, promoting Marshall Mummert to head football coach and hiring Quinton Smothers as the new boys basketball head coach. The moves came at a special board meeting Monday night, less than two weeks after the jobs became open.

Mummert is a Johnston City alum who is also a teacher. He has coached for 19 years, including 16 on the Indians’ staff. He started at Johnston City then left to coach at West Frankfort for three years before returning to JC in 2014. In 2022, he took over the role of offensive coordinator in addition to working with both the offensive and defensive lines.

Mummert succeeds Todd Thomas who stepped down less than two weeks ago but did express an interest in remaining as an assistant coach if the opportunity presented itself.
Smothers comes to Johnston City after 13 years in the Herrin School District. He spent nearly three years coaching junior high girls before moving to the high school boys staff where he was the Tigers’ JV coach. He replaces Scott Burzynski who stepped down.
