CARTERVILLE – The Murphysboro Red Devils took over sole possession of first place in the SIRR girls soccer standings with a 5-0 win at Carterville/Herrin in a matchup of conference unbeatens.
This one scoreless for the first 33 minutes, but Murphysboro scored twice before half. Callie Decker scored the game’s first goal, then in the final seconds of the half, Decker set up Izzy Doerr with a great lead pass. Doerr found the net for a 2-0 Red Devils lead at the break.
Jace Olson, Ady Cunico, and Doerr added second half goals for the final margin of victory.
Murphysboro improves to 11-2-1 (6-0), while Carterville falls to 8-2 (6-1). The two teams will close the regular season with a rematch May 9 in Murphysboro.
