JONESBORO – The much anticipated early season top 10 showdown between number one Carterville and number six Anna-Jonesboro was all Lady Lions, as they handed the Lady Wildcats their first loss of the season–12-0 in five innings.

Carterville junior Caidence Phillips was just about unhittable. Phillips struck out 14 of the 15 batters she faced including the first 12, with a popout to first to lead off the fifth inning the only ball Anna-Jonesboro was able to put into play all game.

The Lady Lions meanwhile scored four runs in the third and blew it open with eight in the fourth, highlighted by Phillips’ grand slam followed by Taryn Ford’s blast into the jet stream.

Phillips finished 2-3 with 5 RBIs. Freshman Lainey Workman was 3-3 with a pair of RBIs. Ford also drove in two on the day.

With the win, Carterville improves to 8-2, while A-J falls to 12-1.
