HERRIN — The Marion Lady Wildcats won their first regional championship in 20 years, beating Freeburg 61-47 for the Herrin 3A Regional title.
Tied at 35 in the third quarter, the Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Midgets 26-12 the rest of the way for the win.
Sophomore Ny’Aajha Curry and freshman Carleigh Midgett led the Marion attack with 16 points apiece with Libbie Garrett adding 10. Freeburg’s Katelyn Whitworth led all scorers with 19.
Marion improves to 20-8 and the season and advances to the Civic Memorial Sectional where the Lady Wildcats will play the hosts in the second semifinal Tuesday night at 7:30. Mt. Vernon will face Effingham at 6:00 in the opener. The winners will meet Thursday night for the sectional championship.
