HERRIN — The Herrin Tigers made it a Senior Night to remember, beating Harrisburg 46-36 to win the SIRR Ohio championship.
Herrin and Murphysboro entered the final night of the season tied for the lead in the Ohio, each with one loss after splitting the season series. When the Red Devils lost at home to Carterville, it opened the door for the Tigers to pounce on the title outright, and pounce they did.
After trailing 20-18 at the half, the Tigers carried a 29-28 lead into fourth quarter where they outscored the Bulldogs 17-8 for the 10-point win.
With the win, Herrin improves to 23-7, finishing 7-1 in the Ohio. Harrisburg falls to 18-11, finishing 4-4 in the conference.
The Tigers will open play Wednesday in the Effingham 3A Regional against Mattoon. The Bulldogs also will open play Wednesday in the Anna-Jonesboro 2A Regional against either Johnston City or Vienna.
