CARTERVILLE — On a day when Vandalia senior and Wisconsin bound Tyson Waughtel set the IHSA record for career wins, Murphysboro senior Bryce Edwards brought home the immediate area’s lone championship at the Carterville Boys 1A Wrestling Sectional.
Edwards will lead an area contingent of 12 to Champaign and the 1A State Meet in Champaign. Benton sophomore Cohen Sweely, Anna-Jonesboro senior Drew Sadler, and Salem senior Keyton King made it to the finals, but lost their sectional title matches. All three lost to wrestlers from Vandalia–Sweely fell to Max Philpot 6-2 in the 113 finals, Sadler was pinned by the record-setting Waughtel in the 126 finals, and King forfeited the 150 title match to Dillon Hinton.
Murphysboro’s Paxton Pyatt (113) and Julien Tanner (285), along with Trico’s Colin Hughey (175) all won their third place matches while Benton’s Braxton Tittle (106), Kaden Blades (138), and Tiffin Kouzoukas (150), along with Murphysboro’s Maxon Stearns (165) and Fairfield’s Talan Keoughan (175) all advance with fourth place finishes.
Mt. Vernon’s Dillon White was the lone wrestler from the immediate area to advance from the Lincoln 2A Sectional. White won the 144 pound weight class to improve to 40-0 on the season.
The state meet opens Thursday morning at the State Farm Center in Champaign.
