CARMI — The Hamilton County Foxes had a chance to wrap up a share of the Black Diamond East championship with a win at Carmi-White County Friday night, but the Bulldogs were rather rude hosts, thwarting any celebration, at least for the time being.
Mitchel Edwards threw down a go ahead, alley oop dunk from Gavin Holloman with 1:19 left, and the Bulldogs came up with enough defensive stops and made enough free throws in the final minute for a 53-49 win.
Mitchel, who also had a key blocked shot in the final minute, led all scorers with 19 points. Holloman added 18, reaching 1000 career points with a pair of fourth quarter free throws.
Kord Lueke led the Foxes with 13 points with Braxton Miller (12) and Kaleb Carson (10) also reaching double figures.
Hamilton County finishes 8-2 in the Diamond East, with the loss opening the door for Fairfield to take the conference title. The Mules moved into first place with a 54-48 win at Edwards County Friday night. Fairfield still has two conference games remaining: at home Tuesday against Flora then next Friday night at Carmi-White County.
The Foxes will be rooting for the Bulldogs to dish out a similar result to the Mules so they can grab at least a share of the title.
