Brooks’ big night leads Murphyboro past Herrin and into tie for conference lead

HERRIN — Cade Brooks scored 11 of his game 24 in the fourth quarter, including seven straight in the final 2:15 to help Murphysboro win at Herrin 48-40, pulling the Red Devils into a first place tie with the Tigers in the SIRR Ohio.

Murphysboro led 34-26 after a driving basket by Brooks, but the Tigers used a 9-2 run to pull within 36-35 on a three-point play by Grady Cox with 2:15 to play.

That’s when Brooks slammed the door shut, hitting four consecutive free throws, then coming up with a steal that led to a game-clinching bucket and foul.

Kemmeon Hale joined Brooks in double figures for Murphysboro with 12. Madox Billingsley led the Tigers with 16 points. Cox added 13.

The Red Devils imrprove to 20-4, 5-1 in the conference. The Tigers fall to 20-6, also 5-1 in the Ohio.
