O’FALLON — A year after holding the lead heading into the final round only to finish second at the Boys Bowling State Championship, the Harrisburg Bulldogs entered the round with a slim lead once again this year, but this time the Bulldogs put together a dominant second day effort to win the state title in convincing fashion.
Led by sophomore medalists James Cranmore (2nd), Dalton Wheeler (4th), and Miles Brombaugh (10th), five Bulldogs finished in the top 24, as Harrisburg knocked down a total of 13,177 pins. That’s the second best team total in state tournament history, which resulted in a 689 pin win over Machesney Park Harlem. That’s the largest margin of victory in state finals history.
Breese Central finished third after starting the final day in 10th place.
Carterville senior David Lutchka made it a southern Illinois sweep, but prevented a Bulldogs’ sweep as he beat Cranmore by 55 pins to win the individual state title. Lutchka, who knocked down 2777 pins, becomes the first Carterville Lion to win an individual state championship since 1962.
