Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament championship game to resume Monday night

SESSER — The championship game of the 43rd Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament between Goreville and Waltonville was suspended early in the third quarter Saturday night due to an injury to Blackcats senior Cole Tripp.

Tripp was trying to take charge and wound up hitting his head on the floor during the play creating a serious medical situation. Tripp was taken to a local hospital and then eventually to St. Louis where all tests have come back fine. He was released from the hospital and returned home Sunday.

As for the game, it will resume at 7:00 Monday night with Goreville leading 42-31. There is 7:20 left in the third quarter, and Waltonville will be shooting two free throws to start play.

Goreville jumped out to a 9-0 lead, but Waltonville answered with a 10-2 to pull within 11-10. The Blackcats led 19-16 after one, and extended that lead to as many as 11 in the second quarter. The Spartans cut it to 31-25, before Goreville pushed the lead back to 39-31 at the half. The Blackcats opened the third quarter with a three-pointer before Tripp’s injury.
