Rams hold off rival Orphans for South Seven win

MT. VERNON — Cale Maurer poured in 17 points, all in the second half, and Trevor McClure was nails from the free throw line down the stretch to lead Mt. Vernon to a 50-41 South Seven win over rival Centralia.

The Orphans led 21-20 at the half with the game remaining back and forth until the fourth quarter. The Rams led 32-31 heading to the fourth, but outscored Centralia 18-9 in the fourth for the win. McClure was 8-8 and Maurer 5-7 from the free throw line in the fourth to help seal the victory for Mt. Vernon.

With the win, the Rams improve to 5-2, 2-0 in the conference. The Orphans fall to 6-2, 0-1 in the conference.

Up next, Centralia will visit Breese Central Tuesday night, while Mt. Vernon will host Miller Career Academy out of St. Louis Friday night.
