MARION — Perhaps the most anticipated matchup of the Legence Bank Shootout at Marion was an early season showdown between two of the top ranked 1A teams in the state, Waltonville and Meridian.

Kyle Cooper scored 25, and Gage Peterson added 21 to help push the Spartans past the Bobcats 65-53.

Waltonville led 20-13 after the first quarter and extended that lead to 35-26 at the half. The lead stayed in the 8-12 points range pretty much most of the second half.

Colin Monan led Meridian with 22 points. Javionne Ranson added 18 for the Bobcats, who are now 3-2. They will host Egyptian Thursday before playing twice Saturday at the Illinois Get Down Shootout at Carbondale–at 11:00 against Cedar Shoals (GA) and then again at 3:30 against Murphysboro.

The Spartans are now 5-0. They will host Sandoval Wednesday night before paying a visit to NCOE Saturday.
