Kellum’s monster day helps Murphysboro blast the Bombers

MACOMB — Tyjaire Kellum rushed for 295 yards and tied a school record held by his great uncle Tony Kellum with six touchdowns helping the Murphysboro Red Devils beat Macomb 56-33 in the first round of the 4A playoffs.

Five of Kellum’s six TDs came in the second half. The Red Devils led 21-19 at the half and extended that lead to 35-19 in the third quarter Kellum touchdown runs of 66 and 35 yards.

The Bombers closed within 35-33 in the fourth quarter before Kellum scored on runs of 8, 3, and 77 yards to put it away.

The Red Devils improve to 8-2 and will have a home game in round two as they will welcome the top seed in the south bracket and the number one ranked team in the state, Breese Central. That game will be at 3:00 Saturday at Doc Bencini Field.
