Roper’s record-breaking night leads Marion to the playoffs

MARION — Junior quarterback Callahan Roper threw for 361 yards and a school record seven touchdowns to help Marion clinch a playoff spot with a 55-34 win over Mattoon.

The Wildcats extended a 22-20 halftime lead with two quick scores in the third quarter. The Green Wave hung around, pulling with 34-27 late in third, but Marion pulled away from there.

Six different receivers hauled in Roper’s seven touchdown passes with Sam Adkins leading the way with five receptions for 123 yards and two scores. Blake Winters also hit triple digits with five catches for 100 yards and a touchdown.

The Wildcats improve to 6-3. They’ll find out their playoff opponent and destination Saturday night when the IHSA releases the playoff pairings after 8:00.
