Late stand lifts Marion past Carbondale

MARION — A game that featured 86 points, well over a thousand total yards of offense, and 59 first downs came down to a defensive stand.

The Marion Wildcats stopped Mozzy Graham’s two-point conversion attempt with 13 seconds to secure a wild, 44-42 win over Carbondale.

Ryian Calonne did a little bit of everything for the Wildcats. The senior rushed for 92 yards and scored three touchdowns. He teamed with Alex Henry and Blake Winters on the game-saving tackle and also had to take on the kickoff duties following an injury to Sam Atkins.

Callahan Roper was 24-31 passing for 264 yards, and the go ahead TD pass to Winters with 1:39 to play.

Graham was sensational for the Terriers, rushing for 167 yards and scoring five touchdowns.

The win makes Marion playoff eligible at 5-3 with a chance to clinch a spot next week at home against Mattoon, while the loss knocks the Terriers out of the postseason hunt. The Terriers will close at Mascoutah.
