ANNA — The Anna-Jonesboro/Cobden Wildcats had a share of the SIRR boys soccer championship locked up heading into their conference finale at home against Massac County. The Wildcats made that outright conference champs with a wild 2-1 win over the Patriots.
After each team had multiple scoring opportunities turned away, AJC got on the board in the 18th minute of the second half when Rylan Frazier bent a free kick inside the near post for a 1-0 Wildcats leads.
Three minutes later, Taj Hodges scored to give AJC a 2-0 lead.
The Patriots got on the board with 3:13 to play when Jack Turner launched a rainbow over AJC keeper Beckett Thorpe, cutting it to 2-1.
Massac County put pressure on late, but could not generate a quality scoring chance.
The Wildcats finish 9-1 in SIRR play, a game ahead of two-time defending champion Murphysboro. The Patriots finish 5-4-1 in the conference.
