MURPHYSBORO — Tyjaire Kellum scored five touchdowns to help lead the Murphysboro Red Devils to their fourth straight win, a 63-6 pounding of Herrin on a rainy night at Doc Bencini Field.

The game was moved up a day to avoid some of the forecasted weather issues associated with remnants of Hurricane Helene headed toward the region.

After a bit of a slow start, the Red Devils recovered a fumbled snap by Herrin and immediately took advantage on Gibson Fager’s 43-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Vaughn. The two-point conversion gave Murphysboro an 8-0.

Then in the second quarter, Vaughn returned a punt 45 yards for another touchdown, giving the Red Devils a 15-0 lead.

That’s when Kellum took over.

The senior scored on runs of 3, 43, and 10 yards before halftime, then added TD runs of 21 and 3 yards in the third quarter.

The Red Devils improve to 4-1 (2-0). They will step out of SIRR Ohio play next Saturday with a visit to Madison. The Tigers meanwhile fall to 0-5 (0-2). Herrin will host Massac County next Friday night.
