SESSER — Sesser-Valier/Waltonville scored on its opening possession, and the Red Devils’ defense made it stand beating Fairfield 8-6 in a matchup of early season Black Diamond unbeatens.
The win was number 255 for SVW co-head coach Mike Rude, moving him past Al Martin for most wins in Southern Illinois and into a tie for 21st on the IHSA all-time wins list.
Jace Erwin scored a touchdown and then added the two point conversion to give SVW an 8-0 lead.
Fairfield got on the board in the second quarter on Jaylen Maners’ 25-yard touchdown to Lane Robson, but the Mules could not convert the two-point conversion.
The Mules threatened late in the half, but Kyler Willmore picked off Maners deep in Red Devils’ territory.
It was 8-6 at the half. Following a hour plus weather delay, neither team was able to score in the second half.
SVW improves to 3-0. The Red Devils will host Carmi-White County next week. The Bulldogs are also 3-0.
Fairfield falls to 2-1. The Mules will host unbeaten Johnston City next week.
