Defending champion Southern Illinois drops opener at Colt World Series

MARION — After a receiving a bye for the opening day, Colt World Series defending champion Southern Illinois had a tough start to the 2024 tourney falling to Masaya, Nicaragua 8-4.

Masaya scored three runs in both the first and second innings to jump out to a 6-0 lead. After Southern Illinois scored twice in the third, Masaya answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to regain its six-run lead and cruise to victory.

Southern Illinois falls to the losers’ bracket and will face fellow host Marion in an elimination game Sunday morning at 11:00.
