Lions Feast: Carterville rolls past Newton to earn trip back to state

JOHNSTON CITY – The Carterville Lions used a dominant effort to roll past Newton 8-1 and capture the Johnston City 2A Supersectional, earning the school’s first trip back to State since winning it all in 2016.

Caidence Phillips struck out 16 and walked no one in a complete game four-hitter. Not that Phillips needed it, but the Lions had plenty of offense as well.

Phillips and Kennedy Rushing each had RBI singles in a four-run second inning, that also featured uber-agressive work on the base paths leading to two other runs. Maddie Rosenbery and Taryn Ford later homered to extend Carterville’s lead.

The Lions improve to 36-1. They will face Rockridge in the first 2A State semifinal Friday at 3:00 in Peoria at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex. North Boone will take on Auburn in the second semifinal at 5:30.
