CARTERVILLE — After Wednesday’s marathon, 14-inning win over Carmi-White County in the semifinals, the Carterville Lions made sure there would be no such drama Saturday.
Carterville scored five runs in the the first inning and never looked back, beating Johnston City 9-0 to capture their own 2A sectional title, avenging last year’s 11-1 loss to the Lady Indians in the Pinckneyville Sectional championship game.
The Lions pounded out 13 hits, including five extra basehits to support Caidence Phillips and Taryn Ford, who combined for a three-hit shutout, striking out 12. Those two helped their own causes at the plate with Ford recording two hits and scoring twice, and Phillips driving in two.
Karson Caudill led offensive attack for Carterville with three hits. Amayah Doyle, Kennedy Rushing and Ford all had two hits apiece. Doyle was on base four times and scored three runs.
The Lions improve to 35-1 and advance to the Johnston City 2A Supersectional, where they will face Newton at 2:00 Monday afternoon.
The Lady Indians finish their season 28-9.
