WALTONVILLE — Only host Waltonville/Sesser-Valier stood between Trico and a sixth straight softball regional championship. Two of the Pioneers’ seniors made sure that streak would continue.
Taylor Cottom homered off the scoreboard to get the scoring started, while Josie Wettig tossed a three-hit shutout and drove in three runs at the plate herself, leading Trico to a 6-0 win.
The Pioneers’ victory earns them a trip to the Goreville 1A Sectional, where they will face Century Tuesday at 4:30. The host Blackcats will meet Elverado in the second semifinal Tuesday evening. Those winners will square off for a sectional championship Friday at 4:30.
The Lady Spartans finished their season 23-9.
