CARBONDALE — Our John A. Logan College Senior Spotlight is shining on Carbondale’s Henry Harsy.

Harsy is three-sport athlete for the Terriers, playing football and basketball, as well as throwing for the track and field team.  He recently signed to continue his academic and athletic career at SIU, where he will throw for the Salukis.

Harsy said SIU was number one on his wish list of schools, and that when the Salukis offered, “it was a dream come true.”

A large number of teammates, friends, coaches, teachers and CCHS staff members filled the gym lobby for Harsy’s signing day. The Terrier standout got emotional when talking about his decision in front of the group, something he said he didn’t expect. “Friendship is everything to me,” Harsy said.

Harsy, who spent his first two years at Du Quoin before transferring to Carbondale, said growing up he thought football would be the sport for him at the next level. Track and field entered the picture his sophomore year.

After not going out as a freshman, Harsy qualified for the 1A state meet in the shot put as a sophomore for the Indians, which he says ignited his passion for the sport. He then qualified for state in 2A for the Terriers last year.

Harsy says having his college decision and signing complete takes some pressure off for his senior season.
