HERRIN — Jersey Summers’ grand slam highlighted a 10-run third inning helping lead the Herrin Tigers to a 12-1 win over Carbondale in five innings.
Without their top two pitchers, the Terriers ran into trouble in the third when multiple bases loaded walks and wild pitches led to five runs, setting the table for Summers, and the Eastern Illinois University signee took full advantage.
Carbondale got a leadoff double from Kaelyn Viernum in the fourth, but Herrin starter Sophie Schramm set down the next three batters to end the inning.
Sydney Tanner clubbed a two-out solo home run in the fifth to spoil the shutout, but Schramm made a nice play to throw out Arwen Robison trying to bunt her way on to end the game.
Herrin improves to 2-0, while Carbondale falls to 0-2.
