Spartans blast Rockets for first regional title since 2008

WOODLAWN — The Waltonville Spartans used a dominant second half to pull away from Okawville, beating the Rockets 52-26 to win the Woodlawn 1A Regional championship. It’s the Spartans’ first regional title since 2008, and only the third since 1993.

Waltonville jumped out to a quick start, scoring the game’s first 10 points. Okawville settled in to cut the deficit in half to 12-7 after one quarter. It was 20-15 at the half.

The Spartans blew the game open with an 18-3 run to close the third quarter. Waltonville outscored Okawville 32-11 in the second half for the 26-point win.

Waltonville improves to 25-6 on the season. The Spartans advance to the NCOE Sectional where they will face Meridian Tuesday night at 7:00 in the first semifinal. Goreville will take on Waterloo Gibault Wednesday night at 7:00 in the second semi.

Okawville finishes the season 11-23.
