Late free throws lift Sesser-Valier past Christopher in regional opener

CHRISTOPHER — Sophomore Liam McMurray buried two free throws with 3.2 seconds to play to give Sesser-Valier a 52-50 win over Christopher in a quarterfinal game in the Woodlawn 1A Regional.

The Red Devils led by as many as nine in the second quarter, but the Bearcats trimmed the deficit to 26-21 by halftime. The game was nip and tuck the rest of the way, with each team leading in the final two minutes.

Sesser-Valier senior Colt Packer led all scorers with 18 points. Jonah Ruffino added 11 for the Red Devils. Scout Hudgens led the Bearcats with 15 with Chase Cole and Landon Sveda adding 11 apiece.

Sesser-Valier advances to face top-seeded Waltonville Wednesday night at 6:00 in the first semifinal at Woodlawn. Okawville and the host Cardinals will square off in the second semifinal.
