Waltonville, Webber advance to MTC Championship game

WAYNE CITY — It will be familiar foes Waltonville and Webber squaring off Saturday night in Wayne City for the Midland Trail Conference Tournament championship.

The third meeting this season between these two teams was set up when the Spartans and Trojans overcame some struggles to win their semifinal games.

Waltonville led Woodlawn by 15 at the half and extended that lead to 21 early in the fourth, but the Cardinals rallied late, cutting the deficit to single digits. The Spartans held on for a 68-59 win.

Kyle Cooper led Waltonville with 22 points. Gage Peterson added 13  and nine rebounds with Makabe Devor (12) and Isaiah Lamke (10) also reaching double figures. Wyatt Rollie led the Cardinals with 19. Josh Lewis added 18 and Tyson Frick 11.

Webber meanwhile pulled away late to beat Grayville 70-54 in the other semifinal. Nathaniel Marlow and Dylan French combined for 52 points to lead the Trojans’ attack. Webber led 36-32 at the half and still led by four (50-46) heading to the fourth quarter. With a 60-54 lead late, the Trojans scored the game’s final 10 points, holding the Bison scoreless the final 3:11.

Marlow finished with a game high 28 for Webber with French adding 24 and nine rebounds. Zach Leavens led four in double figures for Grayville with 18. Ty’zae Rowland added 11 with Jake Hosman and Kanaan Werley each tallying 10.
