Carterville cruises past Benton at Christmas Classic

BENTON — The Carterville Lady Lions used a 20-2 second quarter run to take control and went on to beat the host Rangerettes 53-39 in an opening round game of the Benton Christmas Classic.

Caidence Phillips hit three of Carterville’s four first quarter three-pointers as the Lady Lions led 13-8 after one. Benton tied the game on five straight from Jaycee Webb, before Carterville went on its big run to take a 33-15 lead into halftime.

Carterville advances to face Goreville in the quarterfinals Thursday at 4:30 in Rich Herrin Gym. Benton will face Richland County at the same time in East Gym in consolation play.
