CARTERVILLE — The state-ranked Nashville Hornettes used a stellar defensive performance, particularly in the second half, to improve to 12-0 with a 40-30 win at Carterville.

After battling each other for years in the SIRR Mississippi, this is now a non-conference game with Carterville starting play on the Ohio side this season.

Carterville senior Amayah Doyle scored 14 of her game high 18 points in the first half helping the Lady Lions keep it even at 19-19 at the half.

The Hornettes held the Lady Lions to 11 second half points and put the game away going 11-18 from the free throw to account for all of their fourth quarter points.

Freshman Makayla Gajewski led Nashville with 13 points. Sophomore Emma Behrmann added 10 for the Hornettes.

Hillary Siemer added 10 for Carterville, who had only three players score and fell to 10-2 on the season.
