BLOOMINGTON — When the IHSA released the boys and girls postseason basketball assignments Wednesday afternoon, it did not take fans from the region long to spot something was different.
SIU will not be hosting a boys 1A supersectional this year.
For the first time since 2007, which was the final year of the two-class system, Eastern Illinois University will be hosting a super. The winners of the NCOE and Effingham St. Anthony Sectionals will meet at the newly renamed Groniger Arena (formerly Lantz Arena) Monday night, March 4th. SIU and EIU both hosted Class A supersectionals in the same seasons in the two-class system, with SIU often hosting a AA supersectional as well.
SIU will still host the 2A Supersectional this season, welcoming the winners of the Benton and Shelbyville Sectionals.
Since the move to four classes for the 2007-08 season, SIU has hosted both the 1A and 2A supersectionals in 11 of the 13 postseasons held. The 1A and 2A supers were played in Salem and West Frankfort in 2010 and 2011 while the Arena was being renovated.
In 2020, Goreville won the SIU 1A Super just prior to the rest of the postseason being called off due to COVID. There was no postseason in 2021, also due to the pandemic.
Here are the boys and girls postseason hosts for teams in our region. Specific team assignments for boys can be found here while the girls are here. Pairings will be released in early February.
