Murphysboro blanks Breese Central for regional title

MURPHYSBORO — Cade Brooks scored twice, and Amartez Bankhead recorded his school record 9th shutout of the season helping the Murphysboro Red Devils beat Breese Central 2-0 to win a Boys 1A Soccer Regional championship.

Brooks scored less than two minutes into the game to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead. Murphysboro had multiple other opportunities to add to the lead, but Cougars’ goalkeeper Carter Hubler made several highlight quality saves to keep it 1-0.

The Red Devils finally were able to add to the lead in the second half. With 11:33 to play, Brooks buried a penalty kick for a 2-0 lead. The junior now has 46 goals on the season.

Murphysboro junior keeper Amartez Bankhead recorded his school record ninth shutout of the season, as the Red Devils won 2-0.

Murphysboro will also host the sectional. The Red Devils will face Alton Marquette in the opener Saturday morning at 11:00 followed by Waterloo Gibault and Columbia at 1:00.
