MT. CARMEL — Led by medalist Kash Cantrell’s 69, the Benton Rangers cruised to a 14-shot victory and the Mt. Carmel 2A Boys Golf Sectional championship.
The Rangers had four scores 75 or better to post a school best sectional score of 288. Mattoon and Charleston also qualified as teams for state. Massac County finished seventh and Anna-Jonesboro ninth.
Individually, three area golfers qualified for state–all three Wildcats of various varieties.
Salem’s Jairen Stroud birdied 17 and 18 to finish in a three-way tie for third with a 71. Anna-Jonesboro’s Aidan McFadden carded a 73 to finish tied for seventh, with Marion’s Jack Harre tying for 12th with a 74.
The state golf tournaments will get underway Friday with the boys in Bloomington and the girls in Decatur.
