CARTERVILLE — Carterville won a battle of state-ranked unbeatens, scoring with 23 seconds to play to beat St. Joseph-Ogden 32-28.
The Spartans, ranked third in 3A according to the Associated Press, took a 28-25 lead in the third quarter on Logan Smith’s 74-yard touchdown run.
The Lions, ranked seventh in the latest 4A AP poll, got a defensive stand with 2:05 to play in the game, then marched down the field, capped by Brandon Skelcher’s game winning 18-yard TD pass to Nick Bisching.
Carterville improves to 5-0 on the season.
